Huffing and puffing, sweat-soaked Malaysian police officer Mohamad Ra’ayim Jemahir strains in hot pursuit of an elusive quarry: a fit physique. The Royal Malaysian Police says about 11,000 of its 122,000 officers — nearly 10 percent — are overweight, causing rising health-related absenteeism and costing millions of dollars in lost productivity. Ra’ayim largely blames his weight woes on habitual consumption of Malaysia’s tasty but often fattening cuisine during the typically long stretches of inaction common in policing.
Organic milk and meat contain about 50 percent more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than conventionally produced equivalents, according to a pair of large-scale studies published Tuesday. Previous research has linked omega-3 with reduced rates of cardiovascular disease, improved neurological development, and better immune function. “Western European diets are recognised as being too low in these fatty acids, and the European Food Safety Authority recommends we should double our intake,” said co-author Chris Seal, also from Newcastle University.
The study, carried out by researchers at the University of Bath, UK, looked at a possible link between breakfast, body weight and health and builds on previous research as part of the three-year BBSRC-funded ‘Bath Breakfast Project’. For example, if weight loss is the key there is little to suggest that just having breakfast or skipping it will matter.
