By Lisa Rapaport High school girls who have issues with body image and weight are more likely to be drinkers than ) their peers, a recent U.S. study suggests. Researchers focused on body image behavioral misperceptions (BIBM) – when girls try to gain or lose weight to change how they look even though there’s no medical need for them to alter their weight. In the study of more than 6,500 teen girls, 38 percent had these misperceptions and roughly two-thirds had tried alcohol at least once.

By Will Boggs MD (Reuters Health) – Pregnant women who use marijuana to treat their nausea may be harming their unborn children, according to a warning from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). “Although more research is needed, there is strong reason to believe marijuana could be harmful to fetal development,” NIDA director Dr. Nora D. Volkow told Reuters Health by email. “Women who are pregnant should avoid using marijuana, even though it might seem like a ‘natural’ solution to their nausea.” Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Volkow and associates from NIDA in Bethesda, Maryland cite studies that show a greater risk of anemia and lower birth weights, and a higher risk of neonatal intensive care unit admission for infants, when women use marijuana during pregnancy.

Mexico is one of the world's biggest consumers of sugary drinks and the government imposed a tax on such products in 2014 in an effort to reduce consumption, which has fallen by six percentNearly three-quarters of Mexican adults are overweight or obese and their numbers have slightly increased in the past four years despite government programs to fight the epidemic, a government survey showed Thursday. Mexico has one of the worst rates of overweight and obese people in the world, rivaling the United States, rising from 71.2 percent of people over 20 in 2012 to 72.5 percent this year, according to the health ministry. “There is a very slight increase but it’s not statistically significant,” deputy health minister Pablo Kuri said at a news conference.

In a study on the levy’s health impacts, researchers found the positive effect would be greatest if the drinks industry responds by reformulating products to cut sugar content, rather than keep the same formulations but raise prices to consumers. The planned levy is tiered, starting from no tax on diet and low sugar drinks, a low tax on mid-sugar drinks containing 5 to 8 grams (g) of sugar per 100 millilitres (ml), and a high tax on very sugary drinks containing 8g or more per 100 ml.
