US President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced new plans to combat the epidemic of heroin and prescription painkiller abuse which kills tens of thousands of people each year in the United States. About a dozen funding measures and initiatives were detailed by the White House nearly two weeks after the US Centers for Disease Control urged doctors to exercise more caution prescribing opioids, which can be highly addictive and have led to soaring overdose deaths in recent years. By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) – Women who maintain an overall healthy diet may benefit from a slightly reduced risk of hip fractures later in life, according to a new U.S. study. Women who followed a Mediterranean-style diet were about three tenths of a percent less likely to break a hip over about 16 years, compared to women who didn’t follow the diet, researchers found. Since the Mediterranean diet doesn’t emphasize a lot of dairy, which is usually a good source of calcium and vitamin D, it’s noteworthy that it doesn’t actually boost the rate of hip fractures, said lead author Dr. Bernhard Haring, of the University of Wurzburg in Germany.

By Kathryn Doyle Reuters Health – After one year, gastric bypass surgery did a better job of bringing type 2 diabetes into remission than an intensive diet and exercise regimen, according to results of a small trial among obese patients. Gastric bypass surgery precipitates weight loss and also triggers hormonal and metabolic mechanisms that work against diabetes specifically, beyond just weight loss, said lead author Dr. David E. Cummings of the University of Washington in Seattle. “The new thinking is might we begin to see surgery as a way to treat diabetes primarily,” Cummings told Reuters Health.
