When Should Pain Be Evaluated? Know the Signs

Some pain improves with time and basic home care, while other symptoms deserve medical evaluation. Pain should be evaluated when it persists, worsens, repeatedly interrupts daily life, or is accompanied by concerning symptoms.

When Pain Needs Urgent Attention

Seek emergency care for symptoms such as chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, sudden severe headache, new major weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control with back pain, severe pain after significant trauma, or other rapidly worsening symptoms.

When to Schedule a Pain Evaluation

Consider an appointment when pain lasts longer than expected, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, limits work or mobility, or no longer responds adequately to basic measures such as rest, heat, ice, or appropriate over-the-counter medication.

The Pattern Matters

Your clinician may ask where the pain is located, whether it travels, what makes it better or worse, how long it has been present, and whether you have numbness, tingling, weakness, swelling, fever, or other associated symptoms.

What to Expect During an Evaluation

A pain evaluation may include review of your medical history, medications, prior treatment, relevant imaging, functional limitations, and a physical examination. Additional testing or referrals may be recommended depending on the findings.
