How to Prepare a Clear Pain Update for a First Visit

Healthcare provider reviewing symptoms with a patient during a clinic visit

A first pain-management visit is easier to use well when you can explain the main problem in a few clear sentences. Before the appointment, write down where the pain is located, when it tends to be most noticeable, and which daily activities have become harder.

Focus on changes you can describe

Note whether symptoms are different with walking, sitting, standing, lifting, driving, or sleep. You do not need to identify the cause yourself. A simple description of the pattern gives your provider useful information for the evaluation.

Bring a short records checklist

Have an updated medication list, recent imaging reports if available, and relevant outside records. If you have seen another pain-management provider, bring the most recent documentation you can obtain.

Choose your top questions

Write down two or three questions you want answered so they are not forgotten during the visit. Keeping the list short can make the conversation more focused.
