Headache and Migraine Pain in Tucson: When Should You See a Pain Management Provider?

Recurring headaches and migraine-like pain can interfere with work, sleep, concentration, exercise, and everyday activities. Some headaches improve with rest or short-term treatment, while others become frequent, severe, or difficult to manage. If headaches are disrupting daily life or changing in pattern, a medical evaluation can help determine what may be contributing and what type of care is appropriate.

Canyon Health provides patient-centered pain management in Tucson with an emphasis on careful evaluation, clear communication, and improving function and quality of life.

When should recurring headaches be evaluated?

Consider scheduling an evaluation when headaches are becoming more frequent, lasting longer, interfering with normal activities, repeatedly returning despite reasonable self-care, or requiring frequent use of over-the-counter medication. Evaluation may also be appropriate when headache symptoms are accompanied by neck pain, light or sound sensitivity, nausea, visual symptoms, or pain that makes it difficult to work, sleep, or participate in usual activities.

When is a headache an emergency?

Some headache symptoms need urgent medical attention rather than a routine pain-management appointment. Seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache; a headache with new weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, or other stroke-like symptoms; severe headache with fever and a stiff neck; a significant headache after a head injury; or a new severe headache with major vision changes. Call 911 when symptoms suggest a stroke or other medical emergency.

What can cause persistent or recurring headache pain?

Headache pain can have many possible causes and patterns. Examples include migraine, tension-type headache, neck-related pain, medication-overuse headache, sleep problems, dehydration, stress, certain medical conditions, or other neurologic and musculoskeletal factors. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, treatment decisions should be based on an individual medical evaluation rather than symptoms alone.

What happens during a headache pain evaluation?

Your visit may include discussion of when the headaches started, how often they occur, how long they last, where the pain is located, what symptoms occur with the pain, possible triggers, current medications, previous treatments, prior imaging or specialist evaluations, and how headaches affect daily function. Depending on your history and examination, additional testing or referral may be appropriate.

Keeping a simple headache diary before your visit can be helpful. Note the date, duration, severity, associated symptoms, possible triggers, medications taken, and whether the headache affected work, sleep, or normal activity.

How can pain management help with chronic headache symptoms?

For appropriate patients, pain management may be one part of a broader treatment plan. The goal is not simply to label the headache, but to understand the pattern, identify factors that may be contributing, review previous care, and develop an individualized plan focused on reducing disruption and improving function. Treatment recommendations vary based on diagnosis, medical history, prior response to therapy, and other health considerations.
