Numbness in a hand or foot can be described in different ways: reduced sensation, pins-and-needles, burning, or a feeling that the area is asleep. The description alone does not determine the cause, but changes in function are important to report.

Examples to note

  • Dropping objects or difficulty buttoning clothing
  • Tripping, changes in balance, or trouble feeling the floor
  • Whether symptoms are constant or intermittent
  • Whether numbness travels up an arm or leg
  • Any new weakness, swelling, or skin color changes

Sudden numbness with facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe weakness, or other abrupt neurologic symptoms requires emergency evaluation. New loss of bowel or bladder control also needs urgent medical attention.

If numbness or tingling is persistent and affecting daily activities, Canyon Health offers pain-management evaluation in Tucson. A clear description of when symptoms started and how they affect function can help guide the clinical discussion.
