People living with persistent pain may hear about yoga, massage, acupuncture, relaxation practices, supplements, or other complementary approaches. “Natural” does not automatically mean safe or appropriate for every person. A useful first step is to discuss the idea with a qualified clinician who knows your health history.

Five practical questions

  1. What is the goal? Be specific about whether you hope to improve function, sleep, coping, or another concern.
  2. What does the evidence show for my condition? Evidence differs by approach and by the type of pain.
  3. Could it interact with medicines or other care? Include nonprescription products and supplements.
  4. What training should the practitioner have? Ask about licensing, experience, and communication with your healthcare team.
  5. How will we decide whether to continue? Agree on a reasonable way to track benefits, burdens, and side effects.

Do not stop prescribed treatment or delay needed medical evaluation because you are considering a complementary approach.

Use reliable information

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that evidence and safety vary across approaches and recommends discussing them with healthcare providers. Read the NCCIH overview.
