A productive pain consultation starts with clear information about what hurts, when it began, what has already been tried, and how pain is affecting your daily life. A little preparation can help your clinician understand the problem more quickly and build a more focused plan.
Bring the Records That Matter
- Recent X-ray, MRI, CT, or other imaging reports when available
- Notes from prior pain-management clinicians or specialists
- A current medication list
- Information about previous treatments and how well they worked
- Photo identification and other information requested by the clinic
Describe Your Pain Clearly
Be ready to explain where the pain is located, whether it travels, what it feels like, what makes it better or worse, how long it has been present, and how it affects sleep, work, mobility, and normal activities.
Define What Improvement Would Mean
Useful goals may include sleeping better, walking farther, sitting or standing longer, returning to work or hobbies, or completing daily activities with less limitation.
Prepare Questions
Ask what may be contributing to your pain, whether additional testing is needed, what treatment options may be appropriate, what risks or limitations should be considered, and how progress will be measured.
