Before a Pain Care Plan Changes: Questions Worth Writing Down

A change in a pain care plan can involve new instructions, stopping something that is not helping, further evaluation, or discussing another option. Writing down a few questions beforehand can make the conversation easier to follow.

Ask about purpose and expectations

  • What is the main goal of this change?
  • What improvement would be realistic to look for?
  • How soon should we review whether it is helping?

A goal might involve a daily activity, comfort, sleep, or another function—not a guaranteed result.

Ask about alternatives and safety

  • Are there other reasonable options to discuss?
  • What side effects, interactions, or warning signs should I know?
  • Should any medicine, supplement, or activity be changed?

Never change a prescription on your own. Bring an accurate list of medicines, nonprescription products, and supplements.

Confirm the next step

Before leaving, repeat the plan in your own words. Ask whom to contact for routine questions, when follow-up is expected, and what type of change would require urgent attention. AHRQ encourages patients to ask why a treatment is needed, what alternatives exist, and what to expect. See AHRQ’s question list.
