By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) – People who mix alcohol and diet drinks end up with more alcohol on their breath, according to a new study. People who drank vodka mixed with diet soda had higher alcohol concentrations on their breath than those who drank the same amount of vodka mixed with regular soda, researchers write in Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Prevention materials should include this information so people know that by trying to avoid some extra calories in a mixed drink, they risk having higher breath alcohol concentrations, write the researchers, led by Amy Stamates of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

A boy holds a hamburger made with a doughnut bun at the Los Angeles County Fair in PomonaBy Dave Sherwood AUGUSTA, Maine (Reuters) – Maine’s top health official on Monday proposed banning the purchase of soda and candy under the federal aid program known as food stamps, describing the move as needed to counter an “alarming epidemic of obesity” among the state’s poor. In their formal request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which must approve any change in rules related to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, state officials said the shift would help control the rising costs of healthcare for overweight, low-income patients. A 2012 study by a University of Maine researcher put the annual medical costs of obesity in Maine at $452.7 million.

The journal recently received a letter to the editor regarding our article; its author questioned our handling of saturated fats. We have already submitted a formal response to the journal. One woman repeatedly experienced blood-sugar spikes after eating tomatoes -- normally considered a good food choice -- in a new study that suggests what's healthy for some may be less so for others, researchers said November 19, 2015A healthy food for one person may lead another to gain weight, according to a study out Thursday that suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to dieting is fundamentally wrong. For instance, one woman in the study repeatedly experienced a spike in blood sugar after eating tomatoes, which would generally be considered a low-fat, nutritious food. The findings are based a study of 800 people in Israel, and are published in the journal Cell Press.
