By Samuel Blackstone for DETAILS.(Getty Images)Health pieces tend to focus predominately on exercise and diet. Whether it’s the best exercises for a rock hard butt, the perfect V-lines, or an explainer on organic foods and the difference between a cage-free egg and free-range egg, the topics are exhaustively covered. But what about sleep, the…
By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) – Roughly one third of U.S. adults should be on cholesterol-lowering drugs, according to current guidelines, but almost half of these people aren’t taking the medications, a recent study finds. More than 78 million people aged 21 and older have high enough levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – the bad kind of cholesterol that builds up in blood vessels and can lead to blood clots and heart attacks – to be eligible for LDL-lowering drugs known as statins, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. “Making lifestyle modifications such as exercising and adopting a healthy diet and taking the appropriate medication can be extremely effective in lowering your cholesterol and ultimately reducing your risk of a heart attack or stroke,” lead report author Carla Mercado of CDC said by email.
In our nutrition practice, and in our personal eating practices, we focus on getting enough of the great stuff more than limiting the not-so-great stuff. If we put this into the context of activities for the day and said, “You cannot walk on the grass today. You also can’t run through the sprinklers. You also can’t fly a kite.” That would seem…
Volkswagen has denied a report saying its chief executive and chairman were urged on Sunday by its third-largest shareholder to reduce the influence of VW’s powerful unions as it battles to overcome its emissions scandal. CEO Matthias Mueller and Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch met with leaders of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) in Doha on Sunday to discuss the state of investigations into its cheating of emissions tests, as well as VW’s new company structure and future business focus, two people familiar with the matter said. Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper, without citing sources, said earlier the QIA would use the meeting to demand a scaling back of the role of VW’s works council.
A five-year study undertaken by Dr. Romain Barres of the University of Copenhagen has revealed that the sperm of thin and obese men have different genetic markers, which could change gene behavior in the body. Dr Romain Barres believes it is wrong for health advice (not to drink alcohol, to stay away from pollutants, to eat a balanced diet, etc.) to be exclusively targeted at women during pregnancy. To come to this conclusion, the researchers tested the sperm of six obese men who were undergoing bariatric surgery to reduce the volume of their stomach.
By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) – For women who develop diabetes during pregnancy, low-carbohydrate diets may not necessarily help keep the disease at bay after the baby arrives, a U.S. study suggests. Researchers found that women eating diets high in animal proteins and low in carbs actually raised their diabetes risk. A low-carb diet that was heavy in plant-based protein and fat, in contrast, wasn’t linked to an increased risk of diabetes in the study.
We all know that we should eat a healthy diet and take care of our physical well-being, and yet we frequently don’t really commit to this until we become unwell or hit a physical crisis. Somehow we need something to shake us up… some kind of wake-up call. For many people the same principle applies to meditation. Even though we know that…
