Volkswagen’s top shareholders said the group’s core business is still robust, after the carmaker agreed a record $15.3 billion settlement in its emissions-cheating scandal in the United States. “We are firmly convinced that Volkswagen (VW) has long-term potential to gain in value,” Hans Dieter Poetsch, chief executive of Porsche SE , which owns 52 percent of VW’s voting shares, said on Wednesday. “Despite all difficulties that VW is currently facing in the wake of the diesel issue, we should always bear in mind that its core business is healthy and robust,” Poetsch said at Porsche SE’s annual shareholder meeting.

Mehaffey, from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, told Reuters Health by phone, “It’s not just that people are losing a lot of weight, but they’re also much healthier.” In gastric bypass operations, surgeons remove part of the stomach and reroute the intestines to help patients with extreme obesity lose weight. The American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery estimates that in 2014, 193,000 people in the U.S. underwent weight loss operations, known collectively as bariatric surgery.

While these changes point to some improvements in U.S. eating habits over the past decade, many people still consume too much sugar and processed food and not enough whole fruits and vegetables, the study published in JAMA found. “The overall diet is still far from optimal – less than one-third of American adults meet guidelines for most foods,” said senior study author Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston.
