By Gary Robertson RICHMOND, Virginia (Reuters) – Former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and his wife are scheduled to make their first court appearances on federal bribery charges on Friday. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were charged this week in a 14-count indictment with accepting bribes from the chief executive of a dietary supplements maker, Star Scientific Inc. The pair are scheduled to make an initial appearance and be arraigned in federal court, a court filing shows. McDonnell – who left office this month and was once seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016 – and his wife are alleged to have accepted gifts that included cash, golf fees and clothing, the grand jury indictment said. In exchange, they arranged for Star Scientific executives to meet government officials who could help their business, it said.

By Andrew M. Seaman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa may be able to safely participate in outpatient treatment, according to a new study from Germany. While outpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa is not common in many countries, researchers found that adolescent girls who took part in a day-treatment program didn’t do any worse than those who stayed at a hospital for months of therapy. “I have quite a lot of experience with adolescent patients and I’ve been working with anorexic patients for about 20 years,” Dr. Beate Herpertz-Dahlmann told Reuters Health. Anorexia nervosa is an intense fear of gaining weight that results in self-starvation and the loss of an unhealthy amount of weight.
Obese people with diabetes are able to lose weight on high-protein diets and see improvement in both cardiovascular and renal health, despite initial concerns about the impact on their renal health.

By Shereen Jegtvig NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Men who participated in a community fitness program for obese fathers lost weight and increased their activity levels in a new study from Australia. The researchers’ main goal was to test the ‘Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids’ program in a real-world setting to see if it helped reduce obesity among the men participating – with the hope it would improve the eating habits and activity levels of their children too. “Internationally, obesity in men and obesity prevention in children are public health priorities,” Philip Morgan, who led the study, told Reuters Health in an email. “Fathers have a unique and important role in the lifestyle behaviours of their children, yet little is known about how best to engage them in lifestyle interventions,” Morgan said.
