A study shows that one night’s missed sleep can cause impairment to insulin sensitivity equal to 6 months on a high-fat diet, emphasizing a need for healthy sleeping habits.
“Over the last several years and decades (low-fat) had been recommended as the way to lose and keep off weight, but obesity rates only increased,” said lead author Dr. Diedre K. Tobias of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Over one year or more, low-carb diets yield a couple more pounds of weight loss on average, but that’s not meaningful for most people, she said. Low-carb diets tended to lead to about 1.15 kilograms, or 2.5 pounds, more weight loss than low-fat diets in 18 comparisons.
Effects were long-lasting, and both men and women benefited, researchers say

People who live alone are more likely to have unhealthy diets lacking key foods, QUT research has found.
Up to 62% of patients report chronic pain at the injury site 6-12 months after blunt trauma, with pain from lower extremity fractures exceeding that from other sites. High pain intensity at time of injury is a risk factor for chronic pain, but it is not clear what patient characteristics influence the pain intensity level during the immediate hospitalization following injury. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of collecting pain scores from medical records to calculate pain trajectories and to determine whether it is possible to examine patient characteristics by classifying them into those whose pain improved and those whose pain did not improve.
