Fitness is a lifelong commitment and should be part of any anti-aging program that incorporates hormone replacement therapy. The physical benefits of getting fit and staying that way are many.
Regular exercise firms muscles, strengthens the heart and lungs, improves blood circulation, builds strength and endurance, burns off excess calories, strengthens bones, limbers up the joints and improves digestion. Exercise and hormone therapy go hand in hand.
You should have an individualized lifelong exercise program designed to fit your situation and fitness goals. Fountain of Youth MD physicians encourage a daily goal of exercising for at least 30 to 60 minutes/day, and also making a conscious effort to remain physically active throughout the day (i.e., household chores, working, shopping, gardening, socializing in an active manner).
Forms of aerobic exercise in which Fountain of Youth MD patients commonly participate include walking, running, cycling, tennis,
swimming or cross-country skiing. The importance of variety in exercise programs cannot be stressed enough! We recommend you take turns participating in at least two, or preferably three different activities (i.e., walking-running-tennis, or walking-cycling-swimming).
Choice of exercise should be guided by individual preference and previous experience. Walking and running are most often recommended as they do not require special training or skills. They are also inexpensive, safe, and suitable for doing alone or with others.
Before beginning an exercise program, please check with your family doctor first. The American College of Sport Medicine (ACSM) recommends cardiac treadmill stress testing before commencing vigorous exercise, with “vigorous exercise” being defined as exercise intensity greater than 60% of maximal oxygen uptake for men over age 40, women over age 50, and older patients who have cardiac risk factors with or without symptoms. A stress test is needed for adults older than 65 or who are sedentary.
Also, a personal trainer can be a valuable asset to your exercise program. Personal trainers teach proper form and technique, provide motivation, vary your activities to help reduce the likelihood that you will become bored with your routine, monitor your progress, and provide constructive criticism.
As we all know, the merits of regular physical activity, from preventing chronic health conditions to promoting weight loss and better sleep, are hard to ignore. These benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. So call us to get started today.
